Halloween is here! Finally! This was one of my kids’ favorite celebrations of the year after Christmas & their birthday when they were younger. They got to dress up and people gave them candy. What’s not to like?! The moment to trick or treat would arrive and they’d want to go dashing out the door to conquer the neighborhood.
The only problem is they were so excited they didn’t pay attention. Sometimes the drivers weren’t paying as good of attention as they should either. As a gentle reminder, here are some words of encouragement for drivers and parents.
Drivers
- Remember that anybody under the age of 9 or 10 is running around amped on sugar and not paying attention
- They are dressed in darker costumes and their vision may be slightly blocked by masks and costumes
- Slow down when coming across groups of children, even if parents are nearby
- If the parents are outnumbered by the kids, pay extra attention
Parents
- Remember your kids may be amped on sugar, even if you don’t want them to be, and they may not be thinking but racing
- Your kids vision may be slightly blocked due to the fabulous mask or costumes you outfitted them with & that means they can’t see as well
- Outfit their costumes with reflective tape (it doesn’t take a lot to catch someone’s notice)
- Give them flash lights which also helps them become more visible to drivers
- Partner up with other families so you can have someone on point, parents in the wings and someone bringing up the rear (it’s an old cattle driving method & it works)
Partygoers
And if you happen to be young, headed off to that fabulous party that’s serving adult beverages, have a designated driver! We want you to arrive home safely!
