How to buy home insurance – part 6

Two kids are playing a game of tag on your front lawn.  One slips, falls and cuts their arm on a rock possibly requiring stitches but definitely warranting a visit with a doctor.  You could, as the homeowner, pay for this out of pocket or you could also utilize the medical coverage on your home policy.

Medical payments

Medical coverage comes with all homeowner’s policies written with admitted carriers in Texas.  This coverage pays for medical attention provided to,

  • Someone who gets hurt on your property
  • That someone doesn’t live with you

The coverage amounts typically range from $500 to $5,000.  The difference between minimal coverage and maximum coverage is between $20 and $40 a year which is a lot less than paying for that gap out of pocket.

Medical payments,

  • Are paid on a reimbursement basis
  • Are designed to show good faith by the homeowner and hopefully alleviate a lawsuit resulting in a larger payout on a liability claim

Making sure you’re properly protected begins with a discussion that answers your questions and provides you with the information to determine what you need, without being sold unnecessary coverage.  Have you ever had to use this coverage?  Share with us what happened on our Facebook page at http://on.fb.me/MgrcXK or in the comments section!
