Earlier this week, a pedestrian was struck by an Uber vehicle operating in autonomous mode and died from her injuries. This if the first recorded fatality between a pedestrian and an autonomous vehicle, and it raises several interesting legal, liability, and even insurance related questions worth noting.
On September 20th, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced 15 safety guidelines for autonomous vehicles. The purpose of the guidelines is to provide guidance for traditional automakers and companies such as Uber, Google, and Tesla as they move toward releasing driverless vehicles. Dallas and the North Central Texas Council of Governments, like many municipalities, are working through the task of creating a consistent car for hire policy. The goal is to create a seamless regional approach for cabs, limos, and app based companies like Uber and Lyft. If successful, we can avoid a patchwork approach of different rules and regulations for Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Grapevine, Richardson, Keller, etc.
