Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans fans are licking their wounds today as both teams were knocked out of contention in the past weekend’s games. It will be interesting to see whether who will play in the Super Bowl. Will it be the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons or Pittsburgh Steelers? But just what is the connection between the Super Bowl and home insurance?
A client called me a few weeks ago. We’ve written several insurance policies on some rental properties he and his wife own. They are all traditional single family homes in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. The conversation was interesting because they are looking at selling several of their properties and replacing them with mobile homes. I thought it would be interesting to write about mobile home insurance and how it’s similar yet different from a home insurance policy on a traditional home.
I work with a number of clients who own rental property; some are just starting out with their first property while others have been at it for years and own multiple units. Most people who are starting with their first rental property tend to insure them with the same company that insures their primary home and cars. Those that own multiples may continue to insure theirs in the same way, but is this the best way?

I’d like to build on that in this week’s post with a look at the coverage that should be on a Form 3 Dwelling Policy in order to provide the best coverage for the property owner.

I received a call from a mortgage loan officer in Dallas a few weeks ago. She was working with a couple who was buying a duplex but had not yet obtained insurance. The loan officer wondered if we could help the couple as the purchase was scheduled to close in a couple of days.
I have the honor of providing coverage for a couple who recently moved to Dallas from Fort Worth. Their decision was driven so they would be closer to the wife’s clients and his office. Instead of selling their home though, they decided to lease it to another family. Before doing that, he called me to discuss what they needed to do insurance wise on their Fort Worth home and their Dallas home, one of the loft apartments near down town.
?One of my clients who lives in the mid cities area of D/FW called me last fall. Her parents were moving from El Paso to live near her. The El Paso home the parents had lived in had been rented out to a family. Everything had gone smoothly until the drive-by inspection by their insurance company.
