Home Insurance and the Fire Claim

The Dallas Fire Department arrived at a home in east Dallas about 10 days ago. The home was on fire, yet they were able to put the fire out within 30 minutes. The good news is no one was hurt as the family wasn’t home when it started. It turns out the fire started in the attic. Some overloaded older wiring shorted, sparked and started the fire. What overloaded the wiring raises an interesting question about whether or not the home insurance will cover this fire claim.

The Four Home Insurance Claims That Impact Your Rate

I was reminded this week how much certain types of home insurance claims can impact your rate. I was working with a prospective client’s insurance quotes for a new home a couple is buying. In order to confirm which company would provide the best rate, I ran the CLUE report which shows me claims the sellers may have filed on the home being purchased, as well as the buyer’s previous claims.

A friend of mine called me a couple of weeks ago. She and her husband recently bought their first home together in east Dallas and are remodeling it. They smelled gas and called Atmos Energy who discovered a leak in the gas line between the meter and their home. She wanted to know whether her home insurance policy covered the repair of the gas line.

Detecting and Preventing a Home Fire

Last week was National Fire Prevention Week. While the number of structure fires is down by 10% from 2013, there were still over 1.3 million fires reported, or one every 65 seconds. Every 2 hours and 42 minutes, a person dies from a fire, which is up by 13.5% in 2013. There were over 3,200 fire deaths last year, of which, 3 out 5 may have been averted had there been a working smoke alarm in the home. Even where smoke alarms were present, 23% of all home fire deaths were attributed to smoke alarms that didn’t make a peep.

Will My Home Insurance Rate Change Next Year?

A couple of weeks ago, I was having coffee with a retired couple in a Dallas Starbucks reviewing the home insurance quotes I’d prepared for them. They’d been referred to me by a friend who was concerned they were paying too much for home insurance. They were asking questions about the quotes we’d reviewed and the explanation I’d given for the coverage. The wife asked me one final question which was, would the home insurance premium increase next year?

Home Insurance and Home Updates

I talked with three people who are buying homes in the Dallas / Fort Worth area in the coming weeks. There are a number of questions I ask anyone buying a new home or rental property. In addition to discussing the finish out of the home it’s important to know about the updates the home has had and when they occurred. This is especially true if the home is over 10 years old. The updates insurance companies want to know about and that I discuss are in four key areas: plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, as well as the roof.

Fire Safety Equipment for Your Home

The best kind of home fire is no fire. Preventing a fire is much easier than trying to put one out and dealing with the aftermath it causes, but we’re not always able to do that. Sometimes a fire happens and that’s when detection and containment become critical. Here are two pieces of fire safety equipment every home, condo, and apartment should have.

The Second 5 Top Causes of Home Fires

The end of October is a few days away. Even though Fire Prevention week is past, many fire departments across Dallas, north Texas, and the country take the month to educate people on the causes of home fires. Most of the emphasis is placed on reaching school age children with presentations at schools reasoning that if kids are educated, they’ll teach their parents what to do should a home fire occur.
