Property Oriented Home Insurance Options

Home insurance has several options which can be added to a home or condo policy. Some may even be added to a renters policy. These options provide additional coverage to further protect the home or the owner’s contents. Some options may provide additional liability coverage or enhance the protection of the policy holder’s financial status. We’ll examine each of these three areas over the next couple of weeks.

Replacement Cost Home Insurance and the Other Kind

Over the past few weeks, I’ve written about home insurance covering traditional homes, condos, and town homes, as well as, renters insurance. In all the posts, I’ve mentioned the term replacement cost. On a renters policy, this refers to contents or personal property, while on a home, condo, or town home policy this refers to the actual structure and the contents. Let’s examine what replacement coverage is and how it’s different from the other type of coverage.

How the Government Shutdown Impacts Insurance

As I write this, it appears the members of the Senate and House of Representatives have come to their senses and agreed to fund the federal government for at least 17 more days or until February 8. Who knows what will happen by then! Regardless of who’s at fault, I thought it would be interesting to look at how such a shutdown impacts individuals and insurance.

Some of the homes appear on National and Texas historic home registries and more reside in historic districts. How does writing a home insurance policy for a home in a historic district or on a registry differ appear from writing one built in the 1950’s or that was just finished?

After all, prices for homes in her part of the metroplex have risen sharply in the past few years.

Home Insurance and a First-Time Home Buyer’s Mistake

A friend of mine who’s in the water, fire, and smoke damage servicing business asked me to talk with one of his client’s last week. The client was a first-time home buyer and needed some advice on how to deal with a home insurance claim for 6 leaks beneath his slab foundation. His homeowner’s insurance policy was woefully inadequate to deal with the claim as it didn’t have the right coverage added to it.
