I was in my first earthquake over the Labor Day weekend. For the past few years, Sheri’s family has rented a cabin in Davis, Oklahoma for Labor Day weekend. It’s a great time to get away, be together, cook for each other, and watch too much football. I slept through the 5.8 magnitude earthquake which was felt in north Texas all the way north to Illinois. It didn’t cause too much damage to our Oklahoma neighbors, but it provides a great backdrop to revisit home insurance and earthquake coverage.

Home Insurance and Soil Movement

There are 20 homes in Carrollton, Texas on Barclay Drive which back up to Dudley Branch Creek. The retaining wall behind the homes is failing causing the lots to sink as the soil begins to move downhill toward the creek. Some of the residents have filed a lawsuit against the city of Carrollton saying it’s responsible for repairing the retaining wall while the city contends it’s the homeowners’ responsibility to repair the wall. The estimated cost to repair the wall is $3 million. Home insurance won’t help the homeowners either.

Earthquakes and Home Insurance

zle, Texas has been in the north Texas news a lot lately. The reason is earthquakes. In the past 12 months, the residents of Azle have experienced 33 earthquakes, with 30 of them happening since November. The quakes have registered anywhere from a 2.1 to a 3.7 on the Richter scale. Mineral Wells, a town to the west of Azle, has experienced 3 earthquakes within the same time period.
