Commercial Insurance and Sexual Harassment

A wave of sexual harassment claims began last year from women coming forward to name the men who harassed them; Harvey Weinstein, Bill O’Reilly, Matt Lauer, and countless others. These courageous women provided the foundation giving birth to the #MeToo movement, something that should have happened a long time ago. Commercial insurance companies believe this movement may lead to a wave of employment practices liability claims.

Business Insurance Considerations for Solopreneurs

I had a fun phone conversation last week with a social media solopreneur about business insurance. Ruby’s business has grown, the clients are getting larger, and she wanted to get a handle on the business insurance she should be considering for her growing enterprise. I believe our discussion provides a great framework for solopreneurs and small business owners contemplating their business insurance needs.

Commercial Insurance Hired and Non-Owned Auto Liability

If you’re a small business owner or run a non-profit, did you know you could be sued if an employee or volunteer is involved in an accident while driving their own car or a rented vehicle on business? Unfortunately, it’s true and there is an option that may be added to your commercial insurance policy or purchased separately, if it can’t be added to your general liability insurance, to protect you in such an event. It’s referred to as hired and non-owned auto liability, or HNO liability, and it could save your bacon financially.

Independent Insurance Agents and How We’re Different

A friend of mine sent me an email asking if I’d review her car insurance. After replying I’d be honored to, she asked me a question which comes up once or twice a year. Her question was, “Do I charge for my services?” This question is usually asked by people who’ve never worked with an independent agent before talking with me. Other people, have asked this, as well as, a follow up question, “Will I still be their agent, once I write their policy?” Let’s look at the two categories of insurance agents, how we are alike, how we are different, and the answers to both questions.

Small business is alive and well! I’m working with three new business owners who’ve decided to go out on their own and know they need business insurance to help protect their dream. The new owners include a therapist, a civil engineer, and a new retail store which will sell mattresses. I can’t imagine three more diverse businesses, but surprisingly, there are common themes about their needs. There are many different types of business insurance, however, most small businesses will benefit from two broad categories – general liability and professional liability.

If you didn’t have to have insurance, be it car, home, or business insurance, would you? It’s an interesting question. Many people would probably say no simply because they don’t want to pay for it or think it’s a needless expense. Others would say yes, because they understand the purpose of insurance, even if they don’t care to pay for it.

On Thursday, September 22, Yahoo confirmed data associated with at least 500 million user’s email accounts was breached in 2014 in what may be one of the largest data breaches ever.
